In this post we are going to look at how to change mindset and attitude. You’ll find that most people you come across in everyday life are constantly complaining about every aspect of life. They are stuck in a rut and cannot think of anything positive to say. Unfortunately as humans we just seem to end up this way with a negative mindset.
Your mindset is the way you perceive the world. Your thoughts never switch off off, they are constantly telling your brain what chemicals to make and how to feel. So if you are a complainer, then you are constantly feeding your brain with negativity. In order to change the way you view the world, you will need to change your mindset.
What is Mindset?
As briefly described above, mindset is how a person views the world. Each person has a different mindset and view of the world based upon that individuals values and deep beliefs. A persons mindset is also connected to their attitude, in that a positive mindset breads a positive attitude. But there is a difference between the two which I will cover in the next section.
What is Attitude And Why It Is Important?
Attitude is a person’s view of a person, place, situation, or thing. External influences will influence an attitude more easily than a mindset. The difference between mindset and attitude is that an attitude is something that can be done or witnessed. An example of this is taking criticism in a positive manner or smiling at a stranger.
A positive attitude will allow you to approach all of the challenges life throws at you with a positive outlook. By doing this you will focus on the bright side of life and always expect that positive results will happen. With this way of thinking and using attitude in a positive manner you will produce positive, successful results.
Characteristics and Traits of a Positive Mindset
You should now know what a positive mindset and attitude is. Let’s now take a look at some of the characteristics and traits associated with a positive mindset.
- Gratitude: Consistently appreciating everything that you have in your life.
- Optimism: Taking a chance and giving things a go instead of thinking there’s no point because it may not work. This one is one of the differences between success and failure.
- Consciousness/Mindfulness: In order to change your mindset, you must first be consciously aware of your thought patterns to be able to change them.
- Acceptance: Accepting that things in life don’t always turn out the way you expect them too.
- Integrity: The practice of truthfulness and honesty of your actions to show a consistent adherence to ethical principles and strong moral values.
- Resilience: Instead of giving up after some kind of failure you show resilience by picking yourself up and keep fighting until you succeed.

How To Change Your Mindset And Attitude
#1 Start By Acting Like A More Positive Person
The first step in learning how to change mindset and attitude is to simply act and behave like a more positive person. Doing this can shape your attitude and will gradually over time change the way you view the world. A great example to show how this works is by forcing yourself to smile.
Science has proven that forcing a smile can not only lift your mood, but also lower stress, boost your immune system, and even prolong your life. The way this works is by producing a chemical reaction in the brain. The hormones released such as dopamine and serotonin increase the feelings of happiness.
You can put this into action and practice on a daily basis. First of all be consciously aware that you have to do this. Start by smiling the moment you wake up by using gratitude and being grateful for everything you have. Smile at strangers every time you pass them by. You can also fill you home with positive, inspirational images.
#2 Become More Appreciative
You can drastically improve your mindset just by doing this one technique alone. Use a notepad and write a list of 5 – 10 things that you truly appreciate and feel grateful for. You may struggle to come up with things at first but you’ll find that once you get going, things just start to flow and the process will get easier.
#3 Spend More Time Focusing On The Present
If you truly want develop a positive mindset, one of the main keys to success is focusing on the present. Constantly dwelling on the past or worrying about the things in the future that haven’t even happened yet but put you in a negative mindset and leave you feeling stressed.
This is quit a big subject and too much information for this article, but I wrote a great guide called How To Let Go Of The Past And Live In The Present. Open this up in another tab and once you’ve finished this post on how to change mindset and attitude, read through that post which will further help you on your quest to develop a positive mindset.
#4 Learn to meditate
Meditation is one of the best techniques you can use on a daily basis. Meditation will calm your mind and help you become more present, which is one what I talked about in the previous section.
Here are some benefits of meditation:
- Reduces Stress
- Controls Anxiety
- Promotes Emotional Health
- Enhances Self-Awareness
- Lengthens Attention Span
- May Reduce Age-Related Memory Loss
- Can Generate Kindness
- Help Fight Addictions
- Improves Sleep
- Helps Control Pain
- Can Decrease Blood Pressure
Even just 10 minutes of mediation first thing on a morning and before you go to sleep will dramatically improve your life and improve your mindset.
#5 Change your Self-Talk
The problem most people have is the negative self-talk and doubts that go on inside their head on a daily basis. You constantly tell yourself “I’m not good enough to achieve my dreams”. Thoughts will create reality and this negative self-talk prevent you from having the life that you want.
The conversation that goes on in your head is a direct reflection of your mindset. You can change the negative self-talk by using daily affirmations. Affirmations don’t work by magic, there is actual a science behind it. They work by rewiring your brain for different thoughts, which is called neuroplasticity.
Here’s a few examples of affirmations:
- Other people will not take advantage of me.
- I have confidence in my skills.
- I am not afraid to be wrong.
- Happiness is within my grasp.
- I am confident in the presence of others.
#6 Change your Language
You now know how important it is to change your self-talk, but you must also change the way you talk to other people. It’s easy to slip into a pattern of talking about the bad things that are happening. By doing this you will be putting yourself into the mindset of fear or lack of.
You must get into the habit of only talking about positive things and things that are going well. This will not only encourage a better mindset for yourself, it will also help other people by talking about positive things.
#7 Seek positive friends
The people you spend the most time with are a key factor in developing your mindset. Being around positive, like minded people will help boost your esteem, energy, and happiness. It’s good to hang out with people who share the same dreams and goals as you. This will enable you to experience the highs and lows together.
Seeing one of your friends succeed will give you the motivation and drive needed to start achieving your goals. It’s also great to see failures too, this will allow you to see how another positive person picks themselves up after some kind of failure which will also motivate you.
#8 Have a vision of who you want to be
A crucial part of changing your mindset is to have a clear vision of the person you want to become or the kind of life that you want. The best way to do this is with a vision board. A visions board is where you collect images of the things you want in life such as what car you want to drive, or what does your dream home look like.
The key to making this work is you have to be very specific. Don’t just say “I want a nice car”. Think of the exact make, model, and color car that you want. There are different ways to make a vision board but the way I do it is with Google Slides.
Google slides is free and it enables you to look at your vision board anywhere and anytime. You can collect photos and videos online and keep adding them to your board. Looking at your vision board multiple times daily will enable your subconscious mind to go about making your visions a reality.
#9 Learn & Apply
To keep a positive mindset, it’s important that you keep learning and evolving. There are tons of self-help books out there on positive thinking and the mind which will keep you consciously aware and prevent you from slipping into a negative mindset. Here are a few of my favorites:

- Awaken the Giant Within – Anthony Robbins

#10 Set goals
Setting both short and long term goals are an important aspect for you to change your mindset and achieve success. Having dreams and visions are great, but the best part about goals is they are measurable.
Having a list of things to do on a daily basis will keep you on track and enable you to achieve your final long term goal. As with with the vision board there are many ways to do this, but what’s worked for me is again using Google’s free tools. You even put these goals onto your vision board inside a Google slides document as mentioned previously.
Write them as a list and cross them off each time you complete one of them. Keep adding to the list each time you think of a new goal.
#11 Learn from successful people
Successful people know what it takes and know the blueprint for success. There is no point guessing or trying to re-invent the wheel when you can just emulate what a successful person has already done. As an example, if you want to create a successful blog that will provide you with a full time income, copy what is working.
Find somebody who already has a successful blog in your niche. See what kind of content they are posting, how they generate traffic, what kind of funnels they are using, and how they are actually monetizing their blog.
#12 Change your mindset using a morning routine
Starting off the day with a morning routine is crucial to set up your mindset for the rest of the day. The last thing you want to be doing is waking up and checking social media or new stories filled with negative crap. Here’s a sample routine you can follow:
- Get up immediately, never hit the snooze button. Here’s a great article explaining why.
- Take a cold shower. There is a great article on this blog called “Cold Shower Benefits”.
