A Step-by-Step Guide to Make Money From a Blog
In this article i’m going to be showing you the various ways of how to make money blogging. If you’re providing a service to your readers through tutorials, reviews, or other valuable information, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be making money from your blog. There are a number of ways to do it, which I’m going to be sharing with you in this article.

There’s going to be two kinds of people reading this post, those who have a blog and want to know how to make money, and those who are just about to start a blog from scratch. For those just starting out, here’s a reminder of what you will need.
Step 1: Hosting and Domain
WordPress is the platform you are going to be using for your blog. In order to use WordPress you will first need hosting and a domain name. Here are my recomendations.

Step 2: Keyword Research
Before you start creating any content for your blog, you will first need to do keyword research so you can base your posts around specific keywords. By far the best way to do this is with a tool called Keysearch. Keysearch will not only find a huge list of keywords but will also find keywords that are easy to rank for.
Step 3: Creating Content
You should now start creating content for your blog, based around the keyword research that you will have done from step 2. Aim for at least 3 posts per week but if you can do more then go for it.
How To Make Money Blogging
#1 Affiliate Marketing
The first opportunity I want to talk to you about on how to make money blogging is affiliate marketing. This is my personal favourite way to make money from your blog, as it allows the opportunity for some of that passive income that we all seek. As an affiliate, what you are doing in this scenario is you’re talking about specific products or services that you use and love and can recommend to your readers.
When your readers click through your affiliate link to the merchant’s website and make a purchase, you earn a commission for that sale. Now, you do have to be approved as an affiliate in order to earn that money. It isn’t something you can just add links to random websites around the internet and get paid for. You do have to be approved as an affiliate, and you can oftentimes find those opportunities through the merchant’s website themselves.
Sometimes they’ll have a link at the bottom that says “affiliates” or “partners.” You can also go through an affiliate network, like Share A Sale or Commission Junction. As I said, one thing I love about affiliate marketing is it does offer the opportunity to earn long term. You can have posts in your blog that will earn thousands of dollars in money month after month, even though your not actively in there writing and updating those posts.

My niche is the make money online niche, so Warrior Plus and JVZoo are the best 2 for myself. Clickbank offers tons of affiliate offers in various different niches.
#2 Display Ad Networks
The next opportunity on how to make money blogging is display ad networks. One that you are probably most familiar with is going to be Google AdSense. Now, what these are is just little ads that are placed on your site and you might earn for the impressions, which is how many times that ad is shown, dependent on the page views of your site.
You may also earn through click-throughs, when someone clicks through that ad and goes to the advertiser’s site. In addition to AdSense, there are a couple of other ones that you could sign up and get approved for yourself and then add the ad code to your website. You’ll need to do the experimentation there as far as placement’s concerned and the ad sizes.
Once you get to a certain size as a blogger, you’ll be able to sign up with a company that will do all of that ad management for you. I personally use Ad Thrive on my site. They do have a minimum requirement of 1,000 page views before they will accept you into their network. Monumetric is another one which I believe is 80,000 page views for their free plan.
Direct ad sales is another opportunity that you can implement on your blog. For this one, instead of something like Ad Sense where the advertisers are kind of placing their ads on your site through a third party, with the direct ad sales, you are placing the ad code for your advertiser yourself.
They’re will pay you a flat fee monthly or a flat fee per 1,000 or 10,000 or even 100,000 page views. This one, you are going to find that the most lucrative partnerships when it comes to direct advertising are going to be through advertisers you go out and get yourself. There are a couple of networks, like BuySellAds which in my personal experience those pay a lot less.
You’re not going to be able to get as high quality of advertisers as if you go out and get those partners that you’re really looking forward to working with and that you know are going to be a great match for your readers. Now, if you have been around for a while you’ve probably seen on other blogs things that will say, “This post has been sponsored by,” or, “Our blog is sponsored by this certain company.” Those are oftentimes found through sponsor networks. There’s a couple of them that I’m aware of right now, Massive Sway is one by the SITS Girls.
There’s a company called Pollinate, Social Fabric, and even IZEA offers these types of partnerships. In some cases, you might be sent a product to review and then post about on your blog. In other cases, they may just keep paying you a flat fee to write a post that talks about their company and what they have to offer.
I’m not a big fan of sponsored posts myself, simply because it does take a lot of that … It’s not something you’re going to get paid over and over for. It is something that you’re just going to write a post one time or doing one campaign and then it’s over. That’s something that does require a lot more active participation than something like display ads or affiliate marketing. Now, depending on your niche and the things that you like to talk about, store credit opportunities may be a great opportunity for you.
You won’t be paid a monetary compensation in these instances, but if it’s a product that you use and you love and you’re always reinvesting your profits anyway into it, it may be something that’s worth pursuing for you. One that is really popular is Stitch Fix. They will give you somewhere between $15 and $25 for every person that you get to sign up for that program.
Another one that I’m using right now is through Acorns. Acorns is a micro-investing app, and they have an opportunity as a user that you can offer your friends or your readers $5 in free money to invest in the Acorns app. When they sign up and use that credit, you get $5 that you can reinvest back into the app yourself.
Those can be some great opportunities. I really like those in a lot of instances, so that’s something to check into if there are some products or services that you love, see if they have a refer a friend program. Another great opportunity for bloggers is selling your services.
As a blogger, you know a lot about the ins and outs of what it takes to run a blog and social media. You do a lot of writing yourself. You can use your skills to turn around and be paid by other bloggers for those same services. Every blogger today has a lot of things on their plate that they need to take care of, so many people are outsourcing a lot of their day to day tasks to virtual assistants.
In many cases, if they could find another blogger that already knows what’s going on and isn’t going to have a lot of training time involved, they will go ahead and pay another blogger for that service as well.
#3 Your Own Products and Services
Depending on what your skill set it, you may be able to branch out into other things. Maybe you can offer consulting or coaching on whatever your topic is that you are blogging about anyway. If there’s something not blogging related that you are talking about on your blog, that maybe your readers would be interested in some one on one time with you, you can always offer mentoring and get paid for that.
In addition to services, a lot of bloggers make money by selling their own products. Right now, what we’re seeing a lot of that is digital products such as ebooks or digital courses, and also depending on, again, what you are talking about on your blogs, maybe there’s other products that you can sell.
We do see some bloggers that are getting into things like Amazon Merch, where they’re selling t-shirts or wall hangings or things like that, that have a personal design that they have created that they can sell for a profit on their blog, as another way to diversify their income. I will say this upfront: it won’t be easy.
If you’re not striving to be a top-tier blogger, opportunities may be scarce. If your blog is made up primarily of journaling your daily life to a small group of followers, you may have to get by on love alone. Only a small percentage of people earn a full-time income through their blogs, but it is possible. If you’re only in it for the cash or you put money above your community, however, you will burn out before you make your first cent, guaranteed.
But with your own products and services, you have to put in the hard work to create something to sell and market it. It’s a lot more satisfying, in my opinion, because your success is directly related to the work you put into it. You have to understand your audience to deliver something they need and you need knowledge in order to create a valuable offering. You have to work hard to bring it to life and then you’ll need to market it to successfully make sales.

You could monetize your blog by offering consultancy in your specific niche. This is not a method for a start up website, but it could be something to aim for in the future as you grow your website and become more experienced in your niche.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting
Before you think that you’re ready to make money blogging, ask yourself these questions. Am I ready and able to spend money on blogging? Many opportunities do require a custom domain at minimum. Am I ready and able to blog for six months consistently and a high level of quality before I make any money?
Am I ready and able to handle the ups and downs of blogging income? We’re talking seriously up and down in income. Am I ready and able to get out there, find readers, build community, and support my followers as equally as I expect them to support me? Am I blogging for myself or am I blogging to be of service to others?
Money doesn’t come overnight and it doesn’t come for free, and it certainly doesn’t come to those with readers who don’t trust them. Never let money come before your community, because without your community you have no valuable asset.
Although this seems like a lot of hard work, just remember, if you stick to this and work hard at it, you can create life changing money for you and your family! There is no secret formulas or push button systems that will get you rich quick. Just choose a good theme for your blog, monetize it, then take actionable steps by building up your posts.
You need to pick a niche…eg travel blogging, do keyword research, and put together a weekly content calendar which you stick to. A great start would be if you gave yourself something like a 90 day challenge where you write a blog post every single day for 90 days.
Stick to the deadline no matter what, and at the end of the 90 days you will have a blog full of quality content.
