Being indecisive can cause you to miss out on a lot of things in life. This is why it is so important to become more decisive to allow you to get the most out of your life.
How can you stop being indecisive? Most people think it’s just who they are and they cannot change, but the good news is the psychology of indecision which is full of tips and and tricks will allow you to become a more decisive person. The good news is, absolutely anybody can achieve this with the correct knowledge and a bit of patience.

Making decisions is something in which we all have to do in our everyday life. These can range from small things such as deciding what to have for lunch, to more important things such as making business decisions. A ton of research has been put into the psychology of decisions-making to get a better understanding of why humans can be so indecisive. Before I go into the tips and tricks on how to stop being indecisive, let’s first take a look at why you find it hard to make decisions.
#1 Lack of confidence in your own abilities
One of the biggest factors when it comes to being indecisive is the lack of confidence in your own abilities to make a decision. Surprisingly, even some of the most talented people in their field can suffer from confidence issues which puts doubt into their decision making.
This is a psychological pattern which makes you doubt your achievements known as imposter syndrome. A fear of being known as a fraud is caused internally which can also cause anxiety and stress. Most people can suffer from this at some point during their life which makes you feel like somebody else is always more capable of making the decision.
#2 Decision fatigue
No two days are the same. Some days you are full of determination, and others you will lack the willpower to even get out of bed. An accumulation of all of the decisions you have to make can eat away at your energy levels which can cause decision fatigue. This can hinder your ability to weigh up different options and prevent you from making educated decisions.
#3 You don’t want the responsibility for the outcome of your decisions
Most people are indecisive due to fear of what kind of outcome their decision will bring. This is especially true when it comes to important business decisions where there can potentially be big consequences for making a wrong decision. It’s okay to be afraid, but if you let it get out of control to the point where it paralyses you, you will never reach your full potential.

In a modern world full of too many options, it’s understandable that people feel like there’s always a better option. Being faced with many different options only to end up not making a decision at all is known as analysis paralysis by psychologists.

Procrastinate means to delay or postpone an action and is one of the things that prevents us from being productive. Procrastination can be caused by feeling nervous or anxious about making an important decision.

#1 Tune Into Your Emotions
If you are an indecisive person, one of the first steps you need to take is to stop over-analyzing things. Tuning into your emotions and becoming more emotionally aware can help you to achieve this. You may think this is easier said than done but here’s a few tips which will help you with this.
- Limit your decisions: List all of your options and use your gut feeling to give them a rating of 1 to 10. The option that is ranked at number one is the one you should go with.
- Intuitions: Make a short list of times in your life that a gut-feeling you had turned out to be right. Doing this will help to prove the worth of your intuitions.
- Daily journal: Keeping a daily journal will allow you to bring out any emotions that have been ignoring because they have been locked away for so long.

#2 Try not to overthink the outcomes of your choices
Life is very unpredictable which makes is virtually impossible to predict or calculate future outcomes. It’s good to make calculated decisions and have confidence in that choice, but don’t overthink things in fear that something may go wrong.
#3 Take your time and don’t rush
You may be under the impression that decision making has to be done quickly. Whilst taking too long to make a decision can also be bad, you must realize that you do not have to rush the process. Research has proven that taking a bit more time can lead to better and more calculated decisions.
#4 Start thinking more strategically
There are many factors which can influence decision making. Even a well-lit room or being outside in the sun can have a major effect on the decision you make. Studies have shown that being exposed to brightness can cause your emotions to become more intense. You could even visualize looking in on the situation as a third party.
Thinking more strategically and understanding the different factors that can influence you will give you the confidence to make better more calculated decisions.
#5 Narrow down your options
Having too many options can not only cause analysis paralysis, but it can also lead to depression. For many years I thought having more options was a good thing, but then over time realized that I was less likely to act upon a decision. Here’s what to do when faced with too many options:
- Trust that less is more.
- Be brave enough to take responsibility for your decisions.
- Go with your gut.
- Be present in the moment which will allow you to choose more easily.
#6 Do what scares you
When people are making decisions, it’s usually the case that they will choose an option based on which one will bring them the least risk or struggle. This will not only lead you to make the wrong decision, but it will also prevent you from growing as a person. Be brave and bold and go with the choice that scares you the most!
#7 Who are you trying to please?
One of the reasons people are indecisive is because in a lot of situations, there are other people involved who will be effected by the choice you make. Picking an option because you know it will make your parents or your spouse proud is the wrong way to tackle it. Trying to please multiple different people is always going to make you more decisive.
#8 Have a balance between listening to your mind and trusting your instincts
When faced with a decision, you should follow both your instincts and your mind. Most people will just use their mind and go with the logical decision. The problem with this is you will always go with the safer choice out of fear. This will prevent you from moving forward and following your dreams.
By just using your mind you may also end up analysing the situation too much which can cause you to make no decision at all. Going with just a gut feeling is equally as bad because you will end up making impulsive decisions which may not be the best option. The best way way to make a decision is to strike a balance between the two.
Listen to your heart, but take your brain with you.
#9 Prevent perfectionism by using the 40/70 rule
Too much thinking and evaluation when trying to make a decision can lead you to fall victim of perfectionism. The way to prevent this is with the 40/70 rule.
“Some time after you have obtained 40% of all the information you are liable to get, start thinking in terms of making a decision.
“When you have about 70% of all the information, you probably ought to decide, because you may lose an opportunity.”
#10 Learn to trust yourself
Evaluating your own strengths and having trust in these strengths will help you with the decision-making process. In a lot of cases, being indecisive come from low self-esteem and other insecurities. Make a least of at least five strengths and think of at least one way that each strength could be used to help you make a better decision.
#11 Let go of bad decisions
Letting go of mistakes or bad decisions is something that a lot of people really struggle with. Past failures will cause you to second guess and overanalyze any future decision making which will you become indecisive. The way to get through this is by learning to trust in yourself which I covered in point number 10 above.
#12 Visualize possible outcomes
Visualization will allow you to see the reality and outcome of the choices you are trying to make. Here’s how you can use visualization:
- Close your eyes
- Breath deeply until you feel relaxed
- Use the power of your imagination to see each scenario

#13 Practice on small things first
Just like pretty much anything in life, to become good at something you need to practice. The more repetitions you do, the more proficient you become in that skill. Every day of your life there will be multiple opportunities where you can practice decision making. Even little things such as deciding what to have for lunch or deciding what film to watch (this usually takes me a while).
