In this post we are going to look at how to visualize what you want and visualization techniques for success. Visualization techniques have been used for many years as a way of helping people to achieve their goals and dreams. Research has also proven that you can improve performance in a task just by using visualization alone.
Even elite athletes and entertainers such as Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods, and Jim Carrey have successfully used visualization. There is a lot more to visualization than simply thinking of something and then achieving your goal, and you will obviously have to take massive action to go with it.
So what is visualization and what are the benefits? Let’s take a look at how to visualize what you want and visualization techniques for success.
What Is Visualization?
Visualization is the process of seeing yourself in a future event by using a strong mental image. This enables you to prepare for the event without you actually being there which will help you perform better. The way this works is because the visualization makes it feel like you have already done the event over and over again.
This technique will build self-confidence and allow you to successfully get through the event with ease. You can use visualization techniques for virtually anything you can think of including sporting events, business goals, and even job interviews.
The Science Of Visualization
Research was conducted comparing two different groups of people. The first group regularly trained at the gym and the second group of people were instructed to do virtual workouts in their heads. The results showed that the regular gym members increased muscle by around 30% and the group who just used mental exercises increased muscle strength by nearly half as much.
The Benefits Of Visualization
Now you know exactly what visualization is, let’s take a look at the benefits:
- Builds courage: Seeing a scenario in your head using visualization makes the event feel familiar like you have done it many times. This will give you the courage to tackle the real event.
- Programs your mind: To receive everything you need to achieve your dream.
- Law of attraction: It activates the law of attraction which will allow you to attract many positive things into your life.
- Prevents negative thoughts: Visualization allows you to focus on goals in a positive manner which will combat negativity.
- Creativity: Boosts creativity.
- Purpose: Helps develop a fulfilling life by giving you things to aim for.
How To Visualize What You Want
#1 Decide what you want
The first step in how to visualize what you want is to actually decide what it is you want. This can be anything that you desire. As an example, a lot of the content on my blog is about making money online, and more specifically, blogging. You can setup and number of goals and use visualization techniques to hit these goals.
#2 Visualize short term, and long-term goals
One thing I would always advise is to start with smaller goals. Some people make the mistake of setting a larger goal that is going to take a long time to achieve. Hitting smaller goals on a regular basis will keep you motivated and turn winning into a habit. It’s also good to have a long term goal to aim towards.
It’s important to remember that you have to work hard towards these goals. Visualization is not some magic technique that’s going to give you everything you desire. You will have to put in the required work and sacrifice to make your dream a reality.
#3 Create a vision board
Vision boards are one of the best ways of achieving your goals because instead of just visualising using your thoughts, you will actual have visible images to look at. Not only does this work better but it also keeps you highly motivated.
For example, if you have a dream car that you have always wanted, as well as putting in the work to get there in the first place, having images of the specific car are great for days when you are not feeling very motivated. Actually seeing the reward of what you are working towards will pick you up and keep you on track.
How to create a vision board?
There are a number of ways to go about this, but the method I use is a free tool online called Google Slides. The best thing about Google slides is you can add text, images, and even embed video’s from YouTube.
The big advantage of using Google slides is you can access your document from any device no matter where you are. You can pull out your phone during your break at work and look through your vision board for example.
#4 Visualize with the ‘Mental Rehearsal’ technique
The mental rehearsal technique has been used by athletes for many decades. It’s a good idea to use this technique either first thing on a morning or before you go to sleep. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Imagine that you are sitting in a movie theater watching a movie of yourself doing well at a certain event. Add every single detail of the event that you can think of such as visuals, sound, smell, and even taste.
Step 2: Visualize yourself walking up to the movie screen and entering the movie via a door. Go through the whole process again but this time you will experience the same event but from inside of yourself. This process will increase the impact of the overall experience.
Step 3: The final step is to walk from the screen back to your seat in the theatre whilst the movie is still playing. You should then reach out and grab the screen and visualize shrinking it down to a tiny screen. Put this miniature screen inside of your mouth, chew it and then swallow.
After chewing, imagine all of the pieces of the screen traveling around your body and into your bloodstream with the movie still playing on each piece.
This may seem like a strange process to some people but it’s a technique that really works and it only takes less than five minutes to complete each day.
#5 Create goal pictures
This is a great technique and involves creating a photograph of yourself and your goal together. If you have a dream car that you would like to own, you could go down to your local dealer and have your photo took with it. If you have a dream destination you would like to go to, you could Photoshop yourself in the picture or even use a simple cut out using scissors.
#6 Index Cards
The idea behind this is to write your individual goals on a separate 3×5 index card. You can take these cards everywhere you go with you bu the best times to look through them and visualize is first thing on a morning and just before you go to sleep.
#7 Use affirmations to support visualization
Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat repeat to yourself and should be said as if you already have the things you saying. For example:
“I have the knowledge to make smart decisions for myself.”
“I have all that I need to make today a great day.”
“I am, and always will be, enough.”
Affirmations allow you to re-program a negative mind and turn it into a more positive one. You can use affirmations every single day to help support your goals and visualization.
#8 Live in the present moment
Using visualization on a daily basis is crucial towards achieving your goals but you still shouldn’t be thinking about this all day long. Doing this can actually be counterproductive and preventing you from every reaching your goals. You should find that balance between visualization and being present.
Creating a daily routine for yourself that will last 15-20 minutes on a morning and before you sleep will help you find this balance. The best way to practice being in the present is by using meditation. You should meditate first thing on a morning and just before you go to bed. Meditating before doing your visualization exercises will have a far greater effect and bring more positive results.
